Meet Our Therapy Dogs
Healing with the Help of Our Four-Legged Co-Therapists
At YOUtopia Trauma Healing Institute, we are always looking for compassionate, evidence-based ways to help our clients heal. We’re excited to introduce Animal-Assisted Therapy, a unique and deeply supportive addition to our trauma-informed care. Our specially trained therapy dogs are here to offer comfort, connection, and calm during your healing journey.

What Is Animal-Assisted Therapy?
Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) integrates the presence of trained therapy animals—most often dogs—into the therapeutic process. The goal is to enhance emotional safety, increase engagement, and create opportunities for connection, especially when working through painful or complex trauma.
Research shows that incorporating therapy animals can:
-
Reduce anxiety and physiological stress (e.g., lowered heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels)
-
Increase feelings of safety and trust
-
Support emotional regulation
-
Improve chronic pain management
-
Enhance social connection
-
Improve mood, motivation, and self-esteem
In trauma work, where nervous system regulation and emotional safety are essential, our therapy dogs offer a grounding, soothing presence that can make a significant difference.
What to Expect in a Session with a Therapy Dog
Animal-Assisted Therapy sessions follow the same evidence-based structure you’re used to—whether that’s EMDR, talk therapy, or grounding work—with the added benefit of a therapy dog present in the room. Depending on your comfort level and preferences, you may choose to:
-
Sit beside the dog or invite them onto the couch or mat
-
Pet or hold the dog for comfort during difficult moments
-
Use the dog’s presence to anchor yourself during EMDR processing
-
Take mindful pauses to connect with the dog’s calm breathing or steady heartbeat
Your therapist will guide the integration of the therapy dog in a way that aligns with your goals and emotional readiness. We also understand that not everyone is comfortable around animals, so participation in this service is always optional and tailored to your preferences.
Meet The Pack
Ready to Experience the Healing Power of
Animal-Assisted Therapy?
We currently have four therapy dogs undergoing professional training to become certified therapy dogs. Each dog has been selected for their gentle temperament, responsiveness, and intuitive nature. As they complete their training, they are gradually being introduced into client sessions with supervision and care.
If you're curious about how therapy dogs might enhance your healing journey, we’d love to talk. This service is now available for individual EMDR intensives by request.
